I grudge paying to park in any town to shop or visit and I'm sure others do as well. With many free car parks being removed by Waveney District Council and price increases on the ones left, parking for free in Lowestoft is difficult and shops and businesses suffer as a result. Its obviously your responsibilty to check restrictions and legal requirements before parking anywhere, but I proudly present

The tight arses guide to free parking in Lowestoft.

Please note if you see a long row of stationary cars anywhere in Lowestoft these are not necessarily parked but merely stuck in the perpetual Lowestoft traffic jams.

1.Hamilton Road.Long road by the Hamilton dock.Opposite side of road to derelict oil tanks.Yellow lines at each end but the main part is free of restrictions.Road to left (Trinity road) has a few spaces too.

2.Commercial Road.Turn left just before bascule bridge (North bound) one side of road has no parking restrictions.Close to Lowestoft railway station and town centre.

3.The Asda store on the south side of the bridge. Two hours parking permitted for customers, buy a loaf of bread then go round the town.

4.Bottom of the Ravine.Free car park but with height restriction.Close to sea wall but beach is littered with concrete and metal spikes and closed to public. The area is now a semi residential caravan park but the spaces are still available.

5.Next to Birds Eye on whapload road is a private car park but notices put up by the owners (LEC) allow the public to use it Saturday afternoons and Sundays..
6..In Pakefield behind the Trowel and Hammer pub there is a small free car park.

7..Heading South from the bascule bridge and second left. The cut off section of St Johns road has spaces for a few cars and no notices or yellow lines.

8..Off Hamilton road,Newcombe road has a few long term places at the Hamilton road end,the rest has some short term parking areas.Straight over onto Gas Works road there are some sections with no restrictions and at the far end a few spaces at Ness Point are ideal to eat take away fish and chips and look at the sea. Please respect the area and use the litter bins provided.

9.Behind Birds eye at Ness point (underneath the hideous wind turbine) is a large private car park right by the sea wall. The owners allow this car park to be used by the public on Saturday. and Sundays.Signs to this effect are erected at the entrance. Once again.please respect the area and don't leave litter.

Short term parking near town center.

There are various on street short term parking spaces within reach of the town centre.Off battery green road (Beach road,Suffolk road) parts of Whapload road and Newcombe road.On the other side of the Bascule bridge Various roads off London Road South and parts of Commercial Road.I am told there are no traffic wardens in Lowestoft (2010) this probably explains the cars parked on double yellow lines and loading bays for hours or even days at a time. The very wide path opposite the old Lowestoft Ice Company on battery green road has cars parked on it at all times, you might find a space there.
